Kazmir goes 9, shuts out BoSox
St Petersburg, Fla. ? All-Star Scott Kazmir pitched a two-hitter for his first career complete game, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 3-0 on Monday night.
Kazmir (10-5) limited the Red Sox to a third-inning single by Alex Gonzalez until Manny Ramirez led off the ninth with a double to deep center field to give Boston only its third baserunner over the last six innings.
The 22-year-old left-hander, who’s 3-1 in four starts against Boston this season, walked two and struck out 10, including Jason Varitek four times and Ramirez once to escape a bases loaded jam in the third.
Rangers 6, Blue Jays 1
Arlington, Texas – Rookie John Rheinecker pitched seven strong innings, and Mark DeRosa had three hits and three RBIs to lead Texas over Toronto.
Rheinecker (4-2) gave up one run and five hits, struck out three and walked one for the Rangers, who had lost seven of eight.
Orioles 8, White Sox 1
Chicago – Erik Bedard allowed two hits in eight strong innings, and Baltimore made the most of three Chicago errors during a four-run sixth inning.
Angels 7, Mariners 1
Seattle – Jered Weaver continued his impressive rookie season, striking out nine and limiting Seattle to one run in seven innings, and Kendry Morales hit a two-run homer.
Weaver improved to 5-0 by outpitching fellow young standout Felix Hernandez.
Indians 5, Yankees 2
Cleveland – Rookie Jeremy Sowers wasn’t shaken by New York’s aura or powerful lineup and picked up his first career victory, pitching seven strong innings to lead the Indians.
Athletics 5, Tigers 3
Oakland, Calif. – Jay Payton hit his 100th career homer, a three-run shot in the sixth, and Joe Blanton pitched seven strong innings to help the Athletics end a three-game losing streak .
Blanton (8-7) won for the third time in four decisions.
