Dry holiday expected

City gets nearly an inch of rain overnight

Put your umbrella away and hoist up the flag – thunderstorms have moved through the area and the Fourth of July holiday should be dry, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“The clouds will be breaking up and some sunshine returns,” Schack said. “Temperatures will stay pleasant.”

Today’s high will reach 85 degrees, she said.

“Our chances will decrease as we head through the day for any thunderstorms,” Schack said.

Lawrence got some natural fireworks overnight. Lightning flashed, thunder boomed and the clouds opened up to bring more than three-quarters of an inch of rain to the Lawrence area, she said.

By 8 a.m., all the rainfall has pushed off to the south and east, Schack said.

Lawrence Municipal Airport recorded 0.79 of an inch of rain.

The 6News studios in at Seventh and New Hampshire in downtown Lawrence picked up nearly an inch of rain, Schack said.

Weather radar showed that areas around Lawrence received between .6 of an inch and 1.5 inches of rain, she said.

At 8 a.m., the airport’s temperature was 72 degrees, the humidity was 91 percent and winds were out of the southeast at 6 mph.

Winds today will be from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph, Schack said.

“It looks just fine for the fireworks, if you’re heading downtown to Burcham Park this evening,” she said. “Definitely, I think we’ll have dry conditions for this evening.”

Overnight, temperatures will fall to a low of 61 degrees by early Wednesday morning, she said.

Wednesday’s high temperature will be 84 degrees with partly cloudy skies, Schack said.

“It looks beautiful tomorrow,” she said.

Thursday’s morning low will be 57 degrees. Thursday will bring more sunshine during the afternoon, with the high reaching 86 degrees, she said.
