Brewers slip past Cincy

? Bill Hall homered and had four hits, Carlos Lee singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers pulled off the final rally of a seesaw game to beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-7 on Monday.

Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 554th homer and added a two-run double off All-Star closer Derrick Turnbow in the top of the ninth, putting Cincinnati ahead 7-6. But winner Matt Wise (5-4) retired Austin Kearns with the bases loaded to end the inning, and Todd Coffey (3-3) failed to get an out in the bottom half.

It was Milwaukee’s 22nd comeback victory in 26 home wins.

Griffey’s go-ahead double gave him 1,586 RBIs, surpassing Hall of Famers Harmon Killebrew and Rogers Hornsby for 25th place on the career list. His 18th homer of the season put the Reds up 4-3 in the seventh.

Nationals 9, Marlins 1

Washington – Alfonso Soriano homered twice and drove in four runs, and Pedro Astacio won his Washington debut.

Soriano led off the first inning with a homer and added a two-run shot in the fifth for his third multihomer game this season. Jose Guillen had a three-run drive in the fifth.

Pirates 11, Mets 1

New York – All-Star Jason Bay drove in three runs, and Paul Maholm held the slumping Mets in check for six innings.

Bay hit a two-run double in Pittsburgh’s five-run seventh, and Ronny Paulino and Nate McLouth hit back-to-back home runs to start the eighth.

Braves 6, Cardinals 3

Atlanta – John Smoltz won for the first time in eight starts, and the Braves hit four home runs in a victory over the struggling Cardinals.

Coming off the worst month in franchise history, the Braves have won two straight for the first time since May 27-28, a span of 33 games.

Astros 7, Cubs 2

Houston – Roger Clemens finally got some run support and won for the first time in his latest comeback.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner allowed two runs and four hits and struck out five in five innings.

Giants 9, Rockies 6

Denver – Randy Winn drove in the go-ahead run with a broken-bat double, and the Giants rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to give manager Felipe Alou his 1,000th win.

The Giants leapfrogged Colorado into second place in the NL West, a half-game behind San Diego, which was idle Monday.
