From the Lawrence Daily World for July 3, 1906: “Fizz! Pop! Bang! Independence Day will be celebrated in Lawrence tomorrow with one of the biggest and loudest times ever. No celebration anywhere will offer such attractions to the public as have been scheduled by the Lawrence committee. It will be an all-day and evening event complete with a parade at 1 p.m. and countless attractions to go with the fireworks. : New Yorkers are saying that money that is being generated in the Midlands is draining from their economy and that the rapid growth of the nation to the west is causing concern in the east. In 10 years, 1,516 new banks have been established in nine state, deposits have increased and the money is staying here, no longer drifting to the east. : The city council has decided that the job of the watchman at the city dump is not necessary and will be discontinued. : The so-called trackless trolley being proposed for here is getting an increasingly chilly reception since so many consider it impractical.”
