Nineties continue today

Thunderstorms move in tonight through morning of holiday

Another scorcher is in store for Lawrence today, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We’re going to get up to 95 for a high today,” Schack said. Winds will be from the south at 10 to 15 mph, gusting to 20 mph this afternoon, she said.

The average high temperature for this date is 90 degrees. The record high was 106 degrees, set in 1911.

At 7:30 a.m. today, Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 74 degrees, the humidity was 71 percent and winds were out of the south at 7 mph. The average low temperature for this date is 69 degrees. The record low was 52 degrees, set in 1924.

Schack said storms are staying to the west of Lawrence today.

“We will see a few afternoon clouds develop,” she said. And there’s a slight chance for thunderstorms this afternoon, she said.

Widespread thunderstorms will be rumbling in to the Lawrence area overnight into the morning of the Fourth of July, Schack said.

“After midnight or 1 a.m. we should see the storms arrive,” Schack said. The storms could last into Tuesday morning, then end by about noon, she said.

“The holiday should be OK for the afternoon and evening as the temperature ends up in the mid 80s,” she said.

Tuesday’s morning low will start at 67 degrees and climb to a high of 85 degrees by Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 63 degrees, reaching a his of 87 degrees by Wednesday night.
