Local farmers market to feature grilled fare

Vegetables are being cut. The meat’s marinating.

Now all Hilary Brown needs to do is cook it up for all to eat.

“It’s going to be fun,” said Brown, set to grill during today’s Lawrence Farmers Market. “I’m really not doing anything. This is really to showcase all of them – the producers.”

Brown, owner of Local Burger, will serve as the market’s first guest chef as part of another first for the Downtown Lawrence Inc. operation: the Go Ahead and Grill Me Festival.

The festival is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., part of today’s regularly scheduled market that runs until 11 a.m. in the parking lot at 824 N.H.

Brown will use a grill donated by Swims and Sweeps to cook a variety of meats and a handful of vegetables, all produced by market vendors. The food will be doled out as free samples for market customers.

First up will be pork sausage patties, beef burgers and steaks from Amy’s Meats. Then Brown will serve elk bratwursts, emu fan filets, bison steaks, lamb burger patties, goat ribs and roasted garlic and eggplant.
