Spectacular show

A new textile exhibit at Spencer Museum of Art is a wonderful melding of objects and design.

Congratulations to Saralyn Hardy and her associates at the Spencer Museum of Art for a grand opening for the “Flowers, Dragons & Pine Trees” show at the Kansas University museum Friday.

The textiles in the show – including Persian velvets and brocades, Kashmir shawls, embroidery from northwest India and Pakistan, court costumes from China and Japan, furnishings and festival textiles dating from the 15th century to the late 20th century – are spectacular, and the manner in which they are displayed is impressive.

This is Hardy’s first major show as director of the Spencer museum, and it is a winner in every respect. A treasure of items is displayed in an artful and tasteful manner, and the exhibit opened to a large and enthusiastic crowd. Topping it off was Hardy’s enthusiasm and excitement in presenting this show to the people of Lawrence and the KU community, as well as to the state of Kansas.

Based on Hardy’s first performance, the Spencer is in for some great and exciting days, something the university has been lacking in recent years. It is hoped her enthusiasm and energy will permeate the rest of the university community.
