Lawrence youth wins ecology contest

A Lawrence student is one of 12 winners in a national contest that promotes environmental awareness and thrift among children.

Hillary Podrebarac, 11, a member of KU Credit Union’s Johnny Appleseed Savings and Ecology Club, submitted a winning picture of ways to save the nation’s resources. She received a check for $50, and her entry will be featured in the 2006 national Johnny Appleseed calendar.

The Johnny Appleseed Junior Ecology Club is a nationwide program sponsored by financial institutions interested in helping young people learn more about ecology and money management.

The Johnny Appleseed Savings and Ecology Club is for children age 12 and younger. Every other month kids are rewarded with a prize for bringing in at least a $2 deposit for their own account. For information about membership, call 749-2224.
