Jets hire Schottenheimer

? The New York Jets hired Chargers quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator Monday.

Schottenheimer takes over for Mike Heimerdinger, who was released from his contract last week and Monday became assistant head coach with the Broncos.

Schottenheimer had worked under his dad, Marty Schottenheimer, in San Diego since 2002. He also coached the quarterbacks for his dad in 2001 in Washington.

The former college quarterback played at Kansas University before transferring to Florida.

Heimerdinger replaces Gary Kubiak in Denver. Kubiak was hired last week as coach of the Houston Texans.

Heimerdinger spent the last six years as an offensive coordinator with the New York Jets (2005) and Tennessee Titans (2000-04).

Favre hints he’s done

Green Bay, Wis. – Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre says he has not yet made a decision on whether to play next season, but would lean toward retirement if he had to decide right now.

“If I had to pick right now and make a decision, I would say I’m not coming back,” Favre said in an interview that aired Sunday on ESPN.

The 36-year-old Favre threw a career-high 29 interceptions this season and failed to throw for more than 20 touchdowns for only the second time since 1993 as the Packers finished 4-12.
