The official measurement for drought-ridden Lawrence’s first snowfall of the winter was 1 inch. The moisture content, however, was not enough to provide any substantial aid for the terribly dry conditions here.

Officials reviewed the bids for a renovation and construction project to turn the historic Grover Barn in southwest Lawrence into the city’s fourth fire station and found them pleasing and encouraging. The apparent low bidder was Kansas Steel Built Inc., the only out-of-town bidder, which set up a $248,000 bid and 240 calendar days for the work.
