Old Home Town

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 30, 1906: “Lawrence has under consideration the paving of nearly three more miles of its streets. Ordinances have been drawn up for most of this and passage seems imminent. Few people know the real value and extent of the paving, which is making this city one of the most popular in the state. With the end of the present year, Lawrence will have more than 12 miles of brick paving. The town is becoming a network of brick paving and has a considerable amount of macadam in the edge of the city. . . . The Lawrence Turnverein last night celebrated the 40th anniversary of the founding of the society in this city. . . . Mrs. H.B. Asher was in Topeka to attend the first meeting of the Woman’s Kansas Day Club and to attend a reception at the governor’s mansion. It was quite an honor to be included. . . . A boy on parole from the state reformatory in Hutchinson shot and killed himself while in the custody of two officers rather than be returned to the institution for a parole violation.”
