Soldier flees courtroom upon hearing sentencing

? A soldier escaped after being court-martialed and sentenced to a year in confinement, the military said Saturday.

Sgt. William B. Hendry was convicted of larceny of private property, conspiracy to break into barracks rooms and commit larceny, and burglary. After his sentencing Friday, he fled the courtroom, Army spokesman Maj. Christian Kubik said.

Kubik said Hendry was not handcuffed. He was thought to be somewhere on Fort Riley, and Kubik said the military was working with local authorities to find him.

Besides a year in a military jail, Hendry was to be discharged from the service for bad conduct and demoted to private E-1, four pay grades below his sergeant status.

The Army said Hendry could face additional charges for fleeing. He was not thought to be a threat.
