Wants and needs

To the editor:

It is upsetting to read in a recent newspaper that there is an effort to raise taxes/mill levies again.

I understand there is a cost of doing business, but I know there are seniors on fixed incomes that choose between heat, medicine or food each month. It is wrong to have to choose between paying taxes, being well or being warm.

Our elected officials must understand the difference between what they want and what is needed. They want a sister city program; we need our streets repaired. They want art downtown; we need to stop red-light runners.

The way taxes are raised any more is legalized robbery. Taxes are raised on things you do not have a choice on. You have to pay property taxes.

Some of you will just blow this off. You will say the old man is just blowing off steam. Be careful; if you are lucky you will be a senior one day.

Seniors on fixed income do not get a raise or promotion. These are people who have served on boards and committees.

Our elected officials need to look closely at what they are doing to seniors. We need elected officials who will make unpopular decisions. They need to step forward and say we cannot afford some things. They need to save money without cutting programs or services. It can be done!
