From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 28, 1906: “A chance to earn a thousand dollars now lies at the door of every Lawrence citizen. Two desperate convicts who recently escaped from the state penitentiary in Lansing are reportedly heading this way and may even be in Lawrence now. Any ambitious youth of Lawrence who wants to get rich quick should keep his eyes open, along with everyone else. The men are bad ones and are heavily armed, we are told. . . . Word is that a man arrested here for tunneling into a Topeka bank has been arrested for tunneling before. He may spend a lot of time in prison. : A lecturer from Norway who was on the Antarctic expedition drew large crowds here even though his dialect was badly broken and many had trouble understanding him.
