N. Korea dismisses bird flu report as rumor
Beijing ? North Korean officials say they have had no reported cases of bird flu among humans or poultry, disputing a report earlier this week that a woman was admitted to a Pyongyang hospital with the illness, a Beijing-based U.N. official said Friday.
United Nations officials met with representatives of North Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture and Veterinary Services Bureau on Thursday and were told that there have been no outbreaks among poultry since a case in April and no reported human cases at all, said Dr. Noureddin Mona, China’s U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization representative.
On Wednesday, the leader of a human rights group in Japan said that a woman infected with bird flu had been hospitalized in North Korea in December, and that leader Kim Jong Il had ordered the government to eradicate the disease.
