¢Myriam Bloom and Lynne Sauer, Lawrence, and Lauren Sanders, Wellsville, made the dean’s list for the 2005 fall semester at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. They received at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
¢Brandon Sublette, Lawrence, graduated Dec. 17 from Harding University in Searcy, Ark., with a Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations.
¢Silas Clark, Baldwin, received the Laura & Frank Pospisil Scholarship from Southeast County College-Milford Campus. Silas’ parents are Fred and Margaret Clark.
¢Bethel College, Newton, recently announced area students who made the dean’s list during the fall 2005 semester by earning at least a 3.7 grade-point average. They were Katie Robertson, freshman, Lawrence; Chelsea Chaffin, sophomore, Eudora; and Caitlin Welch, junior, Lawrence.
¢Jason and Melanie Thomson, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, announce the birth of their daughter, Finley Catherine Thomson, born Dec. 31, 2005, in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. She has a brother, Cabot Jones-Thomson, 4. Maternal grandparents are Gary and Susie Bartlett, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Sue Durkin, Eudora; and Peggy and Norman Bartlett, Lawrence.
¢Family and friends are having a card shower for Alois J. “Bud” Madl, who will celebrate his 80th birthday Feb. 6. Cards may be sent to him at 388 E. 1950 Road, Baldwin 66006.
¢Thomas Clark, an eighth-grader at Southwest Junior High School, won first place in the K-12 division of the Rockhurst High School chess tournament Jan. 21 in Kansas City, Mo.
Others who placed in the K-12 division: Sean Stenseng, Free State High School, 10th; Keely Stenseng, SWJHS, 18th; and Peter Lesslie, SWJHS, 19th.
Cole Reams, Quail Run, finished fifth in K-8, and Cordley School students Eddie Wilson and Sam Stephens finished eighth and 14th, respectively.
¢Merry Chadwick and Annie Kettle, both of Lawrence, will perform with the 90-member St. Olaf Band from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., on their Midwest tour. The ensemble will present a home concert Feb. 6 after its nine-city tour to Denver and back. Chadwick, a St. Olaf junior music education major, plays with the oboe section. Kettle, a junior music education major, plays the horn.
¢Lia DeRoin, Lawrence, a junior percussion performance major at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., made the dean’s list during the fall 2005 quarter by receiving at least a 3.75 grade-point average.
¢Nicholas Pavlov, son of John and Linda Surrite, of Lawrence, graduated summa cum laude in December from the University of North Texas. He is working for the Tax Division of the Department of Justice as a paralegal specialist in Washington, D.C. He plans to pursue a career in law.
¢Brandy Jones and Jared Swafford, both of Perry, received scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year from Emporia State University.
