County Commission OKs battlefield funding

The Douglas County Commission on Wednesday night agreed to provide funding for the cleanup of illegal dump sites at the Black Jack Battlefield east of Baldwin.

Commissioners Bob Johnson, Jere McElhaney and Charles Jones, however, also said they wanted to ask the city of Lawrence to chip in with a small part of the cost because of the city’s involvement with the Lawrence-Douglas County Economic Development Board.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will put up 75 percent of the cleanup costs, which could be as high as $90,000, according to cost estimates. The county will pay the remaining 25 percent of the cost but would like for Lawrence to provide 5 percent of the cost.
