Wants vs. needs

To the editor:

Recently, community attention seems to be focusing on the desire to expand recreational sporting opportunities in Lawrence. While I believe that it would be nice to have a state-of-the-art multi-sport complex, I do not believe that it is a priority. There are many more pressing needs in our city. If this project is privately funded, I would certainly have no objection, but if city money is considered, it would fall under the category of “want” rather than “need.” With the present tight city budget, choice of expenditures should focus on our community needs rather than wants.

I believe that one of our most important needs is to support the establishment of an adequate homeless shelter. This would be much less expensive than a multi-sport complex. The present Lawrence Community Shelter has limited space, making it difficult to provide improved services. The city has pledged money to help fund more caseworkers to assist homeless individuals and families. While this is a great first step, much more financial help is needed.

It is important for our city leaders to continue to support and carry out the recommendations of the Community Commission on Homelessness. Now is the time to begin to discuss future funding plans for an adequate homeless facility. I urge the entire community to support this important community need.
