Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 23, 1906: “Harry Williams, who was arrested on suspicion in the 600 block of Massachusetts St. here late yesterday, said it was he who tunneled 11 feet through solid masonry under the Merchants National bank at Topeka and attempted to blow the safes of that institution. He got some postage stamps and was caught using them to make purchases here. He was turned over to Topeka people and is the second important criminal to be sweated into confessing at Topeka within the week. : The local lumber firm of Troville and Kreider has volunteered to furnish complete lumber for the bowling alleys at the new YMCA building here. The lumber is valued at more than $300. : The local campaign against vags is badly hindered by the weak ordinance here against vagrancy. The city attorney is drawing up a stronger ordinance to deal with many citizens consider a growing local problem.”
