Keegan’s report: college basketball

J-W sports editor Tom Keegan each week will observe and analyze the national college basketball scene.

Here are his thoughts for Jan. 15-21:

Player of the week: Daniel Gibson, Texas

The Longhorns’ 6-foot-2 sophomore point guard from Houston turned the ball over twice in 74 minutes in routs of Texas Tech and Baylor, averaged 26.5 points and made 13 of 20 three-point shots, including 9 of 12 against Baylor. Gibson has scored in double figures in each game of an eight-game winning streak and has hit 52 percent on three-pointers in the past four, improving his season mark to 40 percent.

Team of the week: St. John’s

Coach Norm Roberts, former KU assistant under Bill Self, has gotten players to buy into what he’s teaching. Red Storm knocked off ranked opponents Louisville and Pittsburgh, calming a fan base that was angry over early season losses to Hofstra and emerging Marist.

Bust of the week: Wisconsin

No shame in losing at Ohio State, but Badgers then lost at home to North Dakota State, 62-55. Wisconsin shot 22 percent overall and 15 percent on threes against a team coming off a loss to Utah Valley State. Also, suspension and health-related leave of absence jolted Wisconsin.

Game to watch: Texas vs. Oklahoma

Oklahoma badly needs a quality victory to boost its confidence. Inconsistent guard play has been the problem for the Sooners, who have as good a shot as anyone at keeping Texas from going undefeated in Big 12 play.
