Haskell women hold on

Haskell Indian Nations University used a balanced scoring attack and stingy defense late in the second half Saturday to secure a 69-56 women’s basketball victory over Oklahoma Wesleyan.

After taking a slim 39-38 lead at the half, the Fighting Indians (9-8) surrendered just 18 points during the final 20 minutes.

“We won the game because, defensively, we kind of wore them down,” HINU coach Phil Homeratha said. “The last three minutes of the game, we took their legs out from under them.”

Meanwhile, HINU spread the scoring wealth. Whitney Warrior led the effort with 13 points, while Amber Tecumseh and Maria Stevens also finished in double digits with 12 and 10.

HINU is one victory shy of tying the school record for wins since becoming a four-year program. The Fighting Indians will travel Tuesday to Park University in Parkville, Mo.
