Solid quarter powers Lions

? Four points. That’s all Lawrence High’s boys basketball squad allowed in the second quarter of its consolation-bracket game of the Topeka Invitational Tournament.

Twenty-one points. That’s what LHS scored in the second quarter, en route to a 62-53 victory over Wichita West.

“The second quarter killed us,” West coach Deon Allen said. “We dug ourselves too big of a hole, and we couldn’t get ourselves out if it. We had some careless turnovers which helped them score some easy baskets.”

In that second quarter, LHS used a halfcourt trap to frustrate the Pioneers, trapping West and forcing seven second quarter turnovers.

“It really gave them trouble,” LHS coach Chris Davis said of the halfcourt trap. “They had a lot of turnovers, and that kind of got our engines going. From then on, everything was pretty much uphill.”

After trailing 15-8 after the first quarter, LHS took a 29-19 lead into the break and led by double digits for almost the entire second half, stretching its lead to 21 on a Tyler Knight three-pointer midway through the second half.

Knight again was the offensive star for the Lions. He scored 31 on 9-of-14 shooting and hit seven of eight free throws. He scored 17 in the second half.

Knight scored 30 in the Lions’ opening-round game Thursday, but didn’t get to celebrate because his team lost. After combining Friday’s 31-point effort with a victory, he was feeling a lot better.

“It’s bad to put up that many points and lose,” Knight said. “This win is a big confidence boost for us.”

Also helping the Lions was Wichita West’s inability to hit free throws. The Pioneers went 1-for-10 from the line, including 0-for-6 in the second half. Had they hit all 10, they could have sent the game into overtime.

“We’re usually about a 65 percent free-throw shooting team, so for us to go 1-for-10 from the line is just unacceptable,” Allen said. ” They always say if you make all of your free throws and all of your layups, you’re going to win all of your games. Tonight was a perfect example of that.”

LHS (8-4) will play at 1:45 p.m. today in the fifth-place game.
