In about 20 days, a thirsty Lawrence housing market had soaked up almost all of the $9 million in home mortgage revenue bond money available at the city’s savings and loan institutions. Using an average loan figure of $36,000, that meant about 220 homebuyers had rushed to four agencies to get a piece of the action.

The creation of a new pediatric deformities center at the Kansas University Medical Center was announced by Dr. David Waxman, executive vice chancellor for the medical center. The site was to be known as the Todd L. Sutherland Center for Congenital Deformity. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Sutherland of Kansas City, parents of Todd Sutherland, a senior at Washington and Lee University, first suggested the possibility of a microsurgery section at KUMC and were instrumental in the establishment of the center.
