Homeless man to face trial for battery charge

Trial has been scheduled for March 6 for Robert “Simon” Gilmore, a homeless man charged with battering a police officer and making an improper pedestrian crossing.

Gilmore, 48, who is visually impaired and has been hospitalized several times for mental illness, is known for sleeping downtown in the 900 block of Massachusetts Street.

Police arrested him Dec. 30 at Seventh and New Hampshire streets after drivers complained he was standing in the middle of the street and blocking traffic. Police said Gilmore “actively and passively” resisted the officers.

Gilmore remains in the Douglas County Jail and is scheduled to have a pretrial conference March 1.
