Just dumb

Seeing property around town damaged and destroyed for no reason is just depressing.

Vandalism is such a senseless crime. It’s downright depressing to understand that some people out there get some kind of pleasure simply from destroying or defacing someone else’s property. There’s no apparent reason for most vandalism; it apparently is just something for idle, mindless people to do.

In recent weeks, significant incidents of vandalism have been reported at several locations in Lawrence. Spray paint was used to deface exterior walls at the new Hobbs-Taylor Lofts at Ninth and New Hampshire. Two of the decorative Jayhawk statues left over from the Jayhawks on Parade promotion were damaged, one beyond repair. Countless smaller acts of vandalism ranging from the theft of yard ornaments to the destruction of outdoor sculptures are reported locally throughout the year.

What is the point? Does envy drive people to want to tear down what someone else has? Are they so angry they just can’t enjoy an ornamental object, or even allow others that pleasure?

Vandalism is a nonviolent, but not a victimless, crime. Objects that are destroyed often hold sentimental value for their owners, and it’s demoralizing for people who try to have a positive impact on their environment to see their efforts destroyed.

There’s no reason for it. It’s disrespectful and dumb. It’s not funny or cute. It’s just sad.
