Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 18, 1906: “Everything is in readiness for (Kansas River) water to be turned into the flume at the Bowersock Dam tomorrow. The great wheels will then begin revolving after a rest of over two and a half years, ever since the great flood. The generator, one of the finest in this part of the country, will furnish electricity to light the city and run the paper mill, the new flour mill and the new egg case filler factory. Three large turbine wheels are set to go. : Jess Brown arranged his case of wife-beating satisfactorily this morning in police court and is again walking the streets in freedom. He paid his fine and left. : A two-year contract is due to be signed by those who will be involved in debates between Kansas University and Baker University students. : A state treasury shortage of nearly $70,000 may result in Gov. Hoch’s suing the state treasurer.”
