Families turn in teens suspected in beatings

? The families of Thomas S. Daugherty, 17, and Brian A. Hooks, 18, turned the teenagers in to police at 9:45 a.m. Sunday in the beatings of three homeless men, one of whom died.

One of the assaults, captured on a security camera, made national news.

Hooks and Daugherty face murder and aggravated assault charges in the assaults on two homeless men and the death of another over a four-hour period. A surveillance camera captured the two teens on video repeatedly bashing Jacques Pierre, 58, with bats or sticks around 1 a.m. Thursday outside the downtown Fort Lauderdale campus of Florida Atlantic University.

They have been charged with murder for the beating death of Norris Gaynor, whom police believe the teenagers attacked as the 45-year-old homeless man slept in Esplanade Park across from the Broward Performing Arts Center.

Police believe the teens were involved in another attack about an hour after Gaynor was fatally beaten. Raymond Perez, 49, was jumped and beaten outside Church-by-the-Sea just off the 17th Street Causeway.

The teenagers have no prior criminal record, police said.
