Pair get probation for stealing from grandma

A Jefferson County man and his wife have been sentenced to probation for stealing his grandmother’s life savings.

A judge on Thursday ordered Michael Wurm, 44, to be on probation for two years, with an underlying one-year prison sentence if he violates probation. After two years, his probation will be renewable each year until his grandmother dies.

His wife, Nancy Wurm, 53, was ordered to two years probation.

The judge ordered $397,885.26 in restitution, payable in installments of $500 per month.

The Wurms were charged with stealing from Michael Wurm’s grandmother’s bank accounts starting in 1999, when his grandmother gave him durable power of attorney. The thefts lasted until her funds were depleted in 2003, prosecutors alleged.

Michael Wurm was convicted of 10 counts of felony theft, and Nancy Wurm was convicted of six counts of misdemeanor theft.

The case was prosecuted by Atty. Gen. Phill Kline’s office.
