Douglas County Family and Community Education in cooperation with K-State Research & Extension Family and Consumer Sciences is offering a program “My Pyramid … Steps To a Healthier You” at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St.

The program will be presented by Susan Krumm, Extension agent in family and consumer sciences at K-State Research and Extension-Douglas County.

To register, call the Extension Office at 843-7058. The program is open to the public.

The Vinland Family and Community Education unit will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Mariann Bradley. Lola Ford will give the lesson “You Want Me To Do What?”.

The Lone Star 4-H Club had a Christmas party Dec. 12 at the Lone Star church. Members exchanged gifts, decorated sugar cookies and assembled miniature Christmas wreaths. Members collected canned items for a local food pantry and adopted two families during the holiday.

The Douglas County 4-H Foundation had its annual meeting and scholarship reception Jan. 8 at the Douglas County Extension Office. Those who received Achning scholarships were: Erin Ashcraft, Melissa Colgan, Jim Ashcraft, Mark Flory, Katy Taul, Colin Hamel, Reagon Heikes, Lindsey Hitchcock, Samantha Milligan, Cody Wilson, Haven Bouton, Samantha Box, Kelly Flanders, Lauren Gilges, Fletcher Hamel, Kalie Harris, Kelli Harris, Leah Hoelscher, Katie Krysztof, Kailey Mesler, Marla Metsker, Cybill Milburn, Ashley Moran, Lindsay O’Bryon, Brad Rice and Morgan Trowbridge. Lindsey Rich received the Oletha Blevins scholarship. Nicole Taul received the Bradley scholarship and Anne Dinsdale earned the Husted scholarship. Luckan scholarships were given to Michelle Colgan and Elizabeth Pendleton.

Douglas County Extension Service in Lawrence played host to the sixth annual Beginning Judging Expo for 4-H and FFA youth on Jan. 7. About 50 youths from 10 counties learned the basics of judging, how to give oral reasons, and then judged six classes of beef, sheep, swine and horses. Stephen Kalb, Wellsville, was among those who helped teach.

While the expo was geared to learning, some judging notebooks were given to the top five placing individuals in three age divisions. Those who placed from area counties were: Cade Hibdon, Franklin County, first, Justin Patrick, Leavenworth County, second, Elizabeth Patrick, Leavenworth County, third, and Emma Stilgenbauer, Leavenworth County, fifth, 7- to-10-year-old division; Evan Woodbury, Osage County, second, and Chris Berg, Douglas County, third, 11- to-13-year-old division; and Hannah McSpadden, Johnson County, second, 14- to-18-year-old division.

The bimonthly meeting of the Douglas County 4-H Council was called to order by Casey Davis, president, on Dec. 19. Mary Cox, vice president, led the group in the flag salute and 4-H pledge.

Callie Fishburn reported that council members would be responsible for playing host to County Club Days Feb. 4 at West Junior High School.

It was announced that Wesley Callahan was selected to attend the National 4-H Conference March 25-30 in Washington D.C.

Council members were reminded of the following deadlines and events: Shawnee County Lock-in registration deadline, today; Spirit Leader application deadline, Jan. 25; county and state scholarship application deadline, Jan. 26; food fair, Feb. 15; and Horse Panorama and Quiz Bowl, Feb. 10-12.

Callie Fishburn and Wesley Callahan gave a talk about Citizenship In Action, which will be Feb. 19-20 in Topeka.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 20.
