Michigan State wins battle of Big Ten heavyweights

? Maurice Ager scored 28 points, and Paul Davis had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 14 Michigan State to its first Big Ten victory, 87-73, over No. 9 Indiana on Wednesday night.

The Spartans (13-4, 1-2) bounced back from two straight double-digit losses because Ager and Davis were tough to stop after struggling in those setbacks. Ager and Davis combined for 34 points in the games at No. 7 Illinois and No. 21 Wisconsin.

Marco Killingsworth had 27 points, and Robert Vaden added 20 for the Hoosiers (10-3, 2-1), who had won six straight and reached their highest ranking since Dec. 16, 2002.

Michigan State went ahead for good midway through the first half and pulled away with a 10-0 run, taking a 76-60 lead with 3:34 left.

Piscataway, N.J. – Kyle Lowry scored a career-high 28 points, and Randy Foye added 24 as the Wildcats (11-1, 2-1 Big East) rebounded from their first loss of the season by beating the Scarlet Knights (11-4, 1-1).

Greenville, N.C. – Rodney Carney hit six three-pointers and scored 27 points to lead the Tigers (14-2) past the Pirates (6-8) in the Conference USA opener for both teams.

Morgantown, W.Va. – Kevin Pittsnogle scored 23 points as the Mountaineers (11-3, 3-0 Big East) beat the Hoyas (10-3, 2-1) for their best start in the Big East.

Washington – Danilo Pinnock had 19 points, seven in overtime, and 12 rebounds as the Colonials rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit (11-1, 2-0 Atlantic 10) to beat the Billikens (7-7, 1-1).

No. 19 Ohio State 80, Purdue 64

West Lafayette, Ind. – J.J. Sullinger scored 17 points, and Je’Kel Foster tied his career high with six steals to lead the Buckeyes (12-1, 2-1 Big Ten) past the Boilermakers (6-8, 0-3).
