Baker begins search for president

A Baker University search committee has selected 11 candidates for the institution’s top post. One will fill the seat to be vacated by Daniel Lambert.

The committee, chaired by board of trustees member Bob Honse, is checking candidates’ references. The board will meet again Jan. 25 to narrow the candidate list.

Baker spokesman Steve Rottinghaus said the university was seeking a person who, among other things, respects Baker’s history and traditions, demonstrates ethical and honorable behavior, and is an effective fundraiser. Baker is conducting a national search, Rottinghaus said.

Honse was out of town and could not be reached for comment.

The search committee expects to have candidates’ campus visits in early February, and to announce its selection to the board of trustees by May 1.

Lambert will retire at the end of this year. His compensation was $187,358 in 2004, according to a report filed by the university with the federal government.

Ottawa University also is searching for a president to replace John E. Neal, who left in June.

James Billick is serving as interim president.

The university will receive visits from candidates Fred Snow and Gary Streit. After placing their names on the university’s Web site, officials removed the online information and declined to offer further information about the candidates.
