Cancer donations given to foundation

Money in a fund set up to help pay for cancer treatments for Jan Pence has been given to the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation.

“We want to thank everyone for their thoughtfulness and generosity and to let them know that mom was really touched by how caring everybody was,” said Shari Underwood, the youngest of Pence’s three daughters.

Pence, a longtime Lawrence florist, died Sept. 1, two weeks before she was to go to Switzerland for treatment. She was 69.

Friends and family members had donated about $11,000 to the fund. The money was given to the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, Underwood said, because “that’s what mom would have wanted. She would have wanted to help others.”

Pence owned and operated The Flower Shoppe and Bridal Fashions by Jan, both at 1101 Mass., from 1986 to 1993.
