Baldwin, Eudora win in sub-state

? Osawatomie pulled within a point in the fourth quarter, but Baldwin High’s girls basketball team reeled off seven points in a minute to seal a 44-33 victory Monday in a first-round Class 4A sub-state game.

Baldwin converted on its free throws down the stretch, extending the lead to double digits.

Baldwin’s Kelsey Verhaeghe led all scorers with 20 points.

Baldwin (16-5) will entertain Spring Hill at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Eudora – Eudora countered a 5-0 Basehor run to start the game with 16 straight points of its own, rolling to an 18-point victory.

Eudora’s Michelle Deluna hit three three-pointers in the first half, scoring 13 of her game-high 16 points in the first 16 minutes.

Carrie Lister (12) and Nikki Snider (10) reached double digits for the Cardinals.

De Soto – Jackie Goleman scored a game-high 30 points, and Kira Gonzalez added 10, but it wasn’t enough to help the Wildcats overcome an early deficit.

“We worked hard until the end. We just got in way too big of a hole,” De Soto coach Dwight Spencer said.

The Wildcats end the season 11-10.

Wellsville – The Eagles’ hot start and finish were enough Monday night in the eight-point victory over the Bulldogs.

Wellsville jumped to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter, then made its layups and free throws down the stretch to overcome a two-point deficit and outscore McLouth, 21-11, in the final frame.

Colin Wright led a top-heavy attack for the Eagles, scoring 18 points.

Scott Samsel (14), Austin Bloss (13) and Kyle Wright (12) combined with Wright for all but two of Wellsville’s points.

After switching to a zone defense, Oskaloosa allowed just two points in the second quarter to take a 26-22 halftime lead.

The home team never regained its energy after the break, however, mustering just 13 points in the final 16 minutes.

Joe Crawford led the Bears (11-11) with 12 points, while Cody Heston added 10.
