De Soto’s Erisman wins gold

? De Soto High senior Neil Erisman closed out his high school wrestling career Saturday with an elusive state title, winning the 171-pound championship at the Class 4A state tournament at the Salina Bicentennial Center.

The Oklahoma State-bound grappler won the title with a 13-4 major decision over Atchison’s Dustin Bartlett to become the lone area wrestler to win a state title this year.

A trio of area wrestlers won silver medals at the 4A meet. Baldwin sophomore Kevin Callahan reached the finals at 125 before falling 5-2 to Andale’s Blake Fisher, Santa Fe Trail senior Lorenzo Mundy lost 8-5 to Colby’s Cole Garcia in the 140 title match, and Chargers sophomore Jake Kober suffered a 7-2 setback to Andover Central’s Atticus Disney in the championship match at 215.

Santa Fe Trail finished highest among the area schools in the team race, taking fourth with 72.5 points.

At the Class 3-2-1A tournament in Hays, Wellsville’s Aaron Patton won a third-place medal with a 6-3 victory over Phillipsburg’s Dustin Zahorsky.
