Tuscon, Ariz. ? Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder Luis Gonzalez turned down an offer Friday to replace injured Toronto outfielder Vernon Wells on the U.S. roster for the World Baseball Classic.

U.S. team manager Buck Martinez visited training camp and extended the invitation.

Gonzalez said he would have been excited to play had he made the original 30-man roster, announced Feb. 14.

“I hope no fans or anybody is bitter about this,” he said.
