Topeka ? Fourteen miles of Kansas Highway 177 and U.S. Highway 24 in Riley County would be named for former Kansas State University football coach Bill Snyder under a bill approved Wednesday by the House.

The 122-2 vote sent the measure to the Senate.

Snyder retired last fall after 17 years as K-State’s head coach, having been credited with turning a losing program into a strong one. Starting in 1993, his teams played in 11 consecutive postseason bowl games.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius already has tapped Snyder to lead an effort to recruit adults as volunteers to help children.

The designation applies to K-177 from its junction with Interstate 70, north to Manhattan, until it reaches U.S. 24 in Manhattan. Then, the designation applies to U.S. 24 north to its junction with Kansas Highway 13 north of the Manhattan.

The only two votes against the bill came from Reps. Lana Gordon, R-Topeka, and Brenda Landwehr, R-Wichita.

Landwehr said she’s generally against naming highways, while Gordon noted she is a Kansas University graduate.

“Shouldn’t we honor other coaches?” she said.

The House also gave tentative approval to a bill naming two other stretches of highway for veterans.

The 30-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 36 through Smith County would become the World War I Veterans Memorial Highway. Also, a 50-mile stretch of the Kansas Turnpike from south Topeka to Emporia would become the Submarine Veterans Memorial Highway.

Final action on the measure is expected today.
