Helicopter assists police during patrols

The whirring sound Lawrence residents may have heard during the weekend was the sound of a helicopter called in to assist with a special “saturation patrol,” police said Tuesday.

In all, Lawrence police issued 101 citations during the patrol, which stretched from 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. The patrol focused on traffic enforcement in and out of the eastern part of the city, police said.

Lt. John Eickhorn of the Kansas Highway Patrol said the agency’s helicopter was in the Lawrence and Eudora area from roughly 10 p.m. to 3:15 a.m. helping illuminate traffic stops from above. He said one of the areas the helicopter crew monitored was the downtown Lawrence area at closing time for bars.
