The whirring sound Lawrence residents may have heard during the weekend was the sound of a helicopter called in to assist with a special "saturation patrol," police said Tuesday.

In all, Lawrence police issued 101 citations during the patrol, which stretched from 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. The patrol focused on traffic enforcement in and out of the eastern part of the city, police said.

Lt. John Eickhorn of the Kansas Highway Patrol said the agency's helicopter was in the Lawrence and Eudora area from roughly 10 p.m. to 3:15 a.m. helping illuminate traffic stops from above. He said one of the areas the helicopter crew monitored was the downtown Lawrence area at closing time for bars.

Monitor bars at closing time? How about monitoring all night. I saw them circle at least four times above Mass. throughout the night.

Good job Lawrence PD and Kansas Highway Patrol. I was thrilled to see the officers out in force Saturday evening. I would like to see this happen 2-3 times a month in an effort to curb drunk driving. It makes me wonder how many drug arrests were made along with the DUI's since the focus was K10 hwy.

A strong message must be sent to those who choose to participate in illegal activitiy in our downtown. If it takes these saturation patrols, then I am all for it.

Dream: Closing time is when most of the trouble occurs downtown. Officers don't need to be stationed downtown throughout the entire night. There is the entire rest of the city that needs to be covered...

Is a helicoptor patrol really necessary?

Homeland Security Dept offered to give Lawrence a helicopter and our commissioners turned it down. True visionaries.

Sheesh, some people are never satisfied! The LPD has heard the outcry of the need for more patrol on weekend nights and acted on it. What's wrong with that?
