Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 21, 1906: “Col. S.J. Churchill of this city has been appointed assistant inspector general on the staff of Commander-in-Chief James Tanner of the national G.A.R. : The Topeka Capital is roaring because the Schlitz Brewing Co. seems to own the Shawnee County Republican Party. : T.A. McNeal, state printer and editor of the Topeka Mail and Breeze, lectured to a newspaper class at the university Friday and declared that the state’s public school system is all wrong. He said our university is an outstanding unit but that the school system that is the foundation for it needs great improvement. : The city has won its bond case involving the university. Judge C.A. Smart has ruled against the state of Kansas. The city has been freed from all obligation to pay the state the face value of the bonds which were given in 1880 to benefit the university, and on which nearly $100,000 has been paid the state by the university. The court says the state should repay the city. The bonds were issued to build Fraser Hall.”
