Speeding tax

To suggest that there is no revenue motive in the recent ticket-writing frenzy on Sixth Street seems disingenuous. Safety of commuters is cited as a reason for increased enforcement. Future development may impose a need for slower speeds but, for now, traffic flows easily. Access roads have deceleration lanes and better sight lines. The road is clearly safer now than when it was only two lanes.

The death of two highway workers is cited as a reason for enforcement. However, there does not seem to be a correlation between worker presence and police presence.

No one questions the need for safety on Sixth Street or any street. However, the timing of this rash of speed traps leads one to believe that more than public safety and punishment of lawbreakers is being considered.

Let’s at least call it what it is: a tax.
