Frigid, blustery day ahead

Forecast calls for a few snowflakes tonight

Bundle up and put another log on the fire – Lawrence is settling into a deep freeze today through the weekend.

“It’s cold, colder than we’ve seen in quite some time,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

At 4:30 p.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 19 degrees, the humidity was 59 percent and winds were from the north at 14 mph, making the windchill 6 degrees.

This morning’s low temperature was 11 degrees. The average low temperature for today’s date is 26 degrees. The record low was minus 11 degrees, set in 1903.

“We do expect things to be fairly cold throughout the day,” Sayers said. “You’re going to want to warm up that car and dress warmly as well.”

Temperatures will rise to only 24 degrees today, with winds from the north at 10 to 15 mph, he said. The average high temperature for this date is 46 degrees. The record high was 73 degrees, set in 1913

Skies were mostly sunny this morning, but more clouds are moving in this afternoon, Sayers said. Tonight, Lawrence could see a few snowflakes about 8 p.m. or 9 p.m., he said.

“It doesn’t take much to produce snow when temperatures are this cold,” he said.

Temperatures will drop to a low of 4 degrees by early Saturday morning. Windchills tonight will be below zero, ranging from minus 5 to minus 10 degrees, Sayers said.

Saturday’s high temperature will reach only 16 degrees, with winds from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph, he said.

“I don’t expect a lot of sunshine throughout the day to start the weekend,” Sayers said.

Sunday’s morning low temperature will be 3 degrees. Sunday’s high will reach 22 degrees in the afternoon, with the chance for light snow on Sunday night, he said.
