Blustery afternoon, evening ahead

Windchills dipping down into teens

Get ready for a blast of cold weather this afternoon as blustery winds bring frigid temperatures into Lawrence, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“Windchills will stay in the teens throughout the afternoon,” Schack said.

Schack said Douglas County was under a Winter Weather Advisory through noon, when the chance for freezing drizzle and mist ended.

At 12:15 p.m., the temperature was 28 degrees, the humidity was 88 percent and winds were from the northwest at 21 mph, making the windchill 15. The average low temperature for this date is 26 degrees. The record low was minus 7, set in 1903.

Today’s temperature will fall through the day to about 25 degrees by 5 p.m., with winds from the north at 15 to 20 mph, Schack said. The average high for today is 46 degrees. The record high was 72 degrees, set in 1961.

Winds will continue through the evening, making for very cold blustery conditions as temperatures will continue to fall overnight, Schack said.

Temperatures will drop to 9 degrees by early Friday morning, with windchills below zero, she said. Friday’s high will climb to only 24 degrees under partly cloudy skies, she said.

“Windchills will stay in the teens through Friday afternoon,” she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 6 degrees, with Saturday’s high climbing to only 21 degrees, she said.

Sunday’s morning low will be 11 degrees, with the high reaching only 25 degrees on Sunday afternoon, she said.
