Chance for freezing drizzle overnight

Drivers urged to use caution on bridges, overpasses

Freezing drizzle is expected overnight, leading the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for the Lawrence area from 3 a.m. through noon on Thursday.

The weather service says the chance for freezing drizzle is expected to increase after midnight. Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist, said the area has an increasing chance for regular drizzle late this afternoon into the evening

At 5:20 p.m., Lawrence’s skies were mostly overcast, the temperature was 41 degrees and the humidity was 51 percent. Winds were from the northeast at 10 mph, making the windchill 35 degrees. The average low temperature for this date is 26 degrees. The record low was minus 6 degrees, set in 1936.

Schack said today’s high temperature will climb to 44 degrees, with northeast winds at 10-15 mph. The average high for this date is 46 degrees. The record high was 72 degrees, set in 1954.

While drizzle is all Lawrence can expect today, colder temperatures bring a chance for freezing drizzle on Thursday, Schack said.

Overnight, temperatures will fall into the low 30s, bringing a chance for freezing drizzle during morning commute times, Schack said. However, most of the freezing drizzle will stay to the north of Lawrence, she said.

Temperatures will rise slightly above freezing, to 34 degrees, during the morning hours on Thursday, meaning the freezing drizzle would change to regular drizzle during the late morning, Schack said.

However, temperatures will start falling again as a cold front moves in, meaning the drizzle will change back to freezing drizzle on Thursday afternoon, she said.

Temperatures will fall into the 20s Thursday afternoon, with northwest winds 10 to 20 mph, she said.

Temperatures will continue to fall Thursday night, with the low bottoming out Friday morning at 9 degrees, Schack said. Friday’s high will be 24 degrees, with cloudy skies, she said.
