KU to announce new provost Wednesday

Chancellor to introduce provost at media event

The new provost for Kansas University will be announced at a news media conference Wednesday morning, KU officials said today.

Chancellor Robert Hemenway will introduce the new provost, who is also executive vice chancellor for the Lawrence campus, during a media event that will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Adams Alumni Center.

The new provost will succeed David Shulenberger who is stepping down on June 1 after 13 years. Shulenberger will become vice president for academic affairs at the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges in Washington, D.C.

Four finalists for provost have come to campus to be interviewed in recent weeks. A fifth finalist withdrew.

They are:

¢ Karen Gould, professor of French and Francophone studies and dean of the McMicken College or Arts and Sciences at the University of Cincinnati.

¢ Richard Lariviere, dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is also the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker chair in the humanities. He also is a fellow in the IC2 Institute, a research center..

¢ Jack Burns, vice president for academic affairs and research for the four-campus, 52,000-student University of Colorado System.

¢ Virginia Sapiro, interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
