Temperatures climbing into 50s

Sunny skies expected most of the day

Temperatures were in the teens early this morning, with windchills in the single digits. But Lawrence will warm up quickly this afternoon, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“The sunshine will return and the temperatures will make a nice jump into the mid 50s,” Schack said. “If we see any clouds it will be late in the afternoon.”

At 12:10 p.m., the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 47 degrees, the humidity was 31 percent and winds were from the southwest at 13 mph, gusting to 23 mph, making the windchill 41 degrees. Today’s low temperature was 12 degrees. Windchills were as low as 6 degrees this morning. The average low temperature for this date is 25 degrees, and the record low was minus 20 degrees, set in 1905.

Today’s high temperature will climb to 54 degrees, with winds from the west-southwest at 10 to 15 mph, Schack said. The average high temperature for this date is 45 degrees. The record high is 75 degrees, set in 1921.

Overnight, winds will be from the west at 5-10 mph and Lawrence’s temperature will fall to 28 degrees by early Tuesday morning, she said.

“It’s a very sweet Valentine’s Day in the forecast,” Schack said.

Tuesday’s skies will be mostly sunny, with the temperature climbing to 59 degrees, she said. Winds will be from the south at 5 to 12 mph, she said.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 32 degrees, with Wednesday’s high reaching 47 degrees. Skies will be cloudy as cold front moves into the area late Wednesday into early Thursday, she said.

The cold front could bring a wintery mix of sleet and snow on Thursday, she said.
