Chesang, Battle record strong finishes at ISU Classic

? Benson Chesang finished second Saturday in the 3,000-meter run as the Kansas University men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up their performances at the ISU Classic.

Chesang improved upon his provisional qualifying time from last week’s Husker Invitational, crossing the line in 7 minutes, 58.05 seconds. Teammate Colby Wissel also earned a provisional qualification in the same race, finishing in 8:04.19.

Sheldon Battle, who has the longest throw in the nation this year in the shot put, led all collegiate entrants with a toss of 63 feet, 23â4 inches. He placed third behind two throwers representing Nike.

Angela Pichardo finished 12th in the 800 meters in 2:09.42, narrowly missing a provisional qualification.

Also Saturday, Crystal Manning took fifth in the triple jump at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. Her leap of 41-33â4 is No. 2 all-time for a KU jumper.

Brett Terp finished second in the high jump, clearing 6-71â2.

The two teams return to action Feb. 24-25 at the Big 12 Indoor Championships at Lincoln, Neb.
