Police investigating missing city funds

? Police and city officials said Friday that “tens of thousands of dollars” in tournament entry fees and concession stand receipts are missing from the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department – and that the missing money might be connected to a fantasy sports gambling ring involving city employees.

“It’s pretty difficult to pinpoint the actual magnitude,” City Manager Ron Fehr said, “because deposit slips and receipts have been altered.”

In a joint news release announcing the ongoing investigation, Riley County police and city officials said the missing money was discovered after a 2005 audit recommended the city tighten its controls over Parks and Recreation receipts.

“The police discovered the gambling ring as an aside to their investigation into the missing money,” Fehr said.
