Old home town – 100 years ago today
From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 9, 1906: “The supreme court of Illinois today denied a rehearing to John Hoch, polygamist. Hoch was sentenced to hang Feb. 23 and it appears the law will take its course. : No more jointists have been jailed by the courts here since they ran out of people to convict. It seems they have made a clean sweep, at least for now. : Three more blocks have been approved for the big paving project this year at a cost of more than $130,000. In all, some 13 blocks are due to get paving making Lawrence one of the towns with the best streets in the area. : The end men of the Elks Minstrel Show rehearsed last night and it appears this year’s show will be the best ever. : The World commends the lawyers who are taking up the cases for jointists, to defend them when public opinion is so set against them. Everyone deserves a decent, honest defense, even jointists who contribute so much to the problems of the town.”
