Wetmore topples Seabury

Different day, same story. Coach Marcus Heckman is all too used to it.

His Seabury Academy boys basketball squad started out slowly Tuesday, as they have many times this year, and lost to Wetmore, 55-33.

“It was a frustrating night,” Heckman said. “It’s hard to play catch-up. We came out completely flat tonight.”

For much of the first quarter it appeared the fans were in for a good game. The score stayed close until Wetmore finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to make it 19-12. It was more of the same in the second quarter, as Wetmore hit two of its six first-half three-pointers to extend its lead to 33-18 at the break.

“It was rough,” Seabury senior Adam Davis said. “They must have shot 20 threes and only made 18 of them. It was just ridiculous. We were a little tired coming out the gate, but they were just on fire.”

Wetmore controlled the glass in the first half, outrebounding Seabury 24-11. Those numbers didn’t change in the second half, and neither did the score. Seabury (7-8) continued to struggle from the field, missing multiple close-range shots. The Seahawks also struggled from the outside, failing to hit even one three-pointer.

“We couldn’t make any shots,” Davis said. “Their zone killed us. We just stood around, and you can’t do that.”

Davis led the Seahawks with 13 points. He scored most of his points on driving layups to the basket and also went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Only four other players scored for Seabury: Paul Bireta posted eight, Grayson Dillon six, Scotty King four, and Max Cannon two.

Wetmore also only had five players score Tuesday, but three had at least 14 points. Darren Watkins led the way with 16 points, 12 of which came on four three-pointers. Jareb Stallbaumer also had four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Marcus Wamsley rounded out the trio with 14 points.

Wetmore 60, Seabury girls 22

The girls fared even worse. Last year, Wetmore finished second at the state tournament, and they look ready to make another run this year.

Seabury (5-10) trailed at halftime, 35-8. Only five players scored for the Seahawks, and none had more than seven points.
