Pete, Fightin’ Indians rally from 22 down

Haskell Indian Nations University overcame a 22-point deficit to defeat Peru State, 82-78, in women’s basketball Tuesday at Coffin Sports Complex.

After trailing 30-8, Haskell finally caught Peru at 68 with four minutes remaining.

“It was all just about a team fighting back,” Haskell coach Phil Homeratha said. “It was one of the best efforts we’ve had. And we shot real well.”

Samantha Pete scored 28 points on 9-of-12 shooting and also grabbed five rebounds for the Fightin’ Indians. Maria Stevens added 20 points, and Margaret Stevens scored 10 points.

Haskell outrebounded Peru, 35-20, led by Lucita Yesslith with six rebounds.

“Sam, of course, was big, but everybody else came through for us.”

Haskell (12-10) will play host Tuesday to Central Christian.
