Geeks hand Lightning Strikers loss in first game of Futsal season

Don’t let the name fool you. The Geeks are anything but a bunch of kids with pocket protectors and thick glasses. It might be a bit of a misnomer, but the Geeks showed off their soccer skills against the Lightning Strikers Saturday morning at the East Lawrence Center. They secured a 9-1 victory in the opening game of the Girls Recreation division.

Futsal Indoor Soccer is played with five players per team, including the goalkeeper, and substitutions are made on the fly, like line changes in hockey.

Both teams took advantage of this style of substitution to keep players fresh and get everyone solid minutes on the floor. The Geeks showed their quickness early as Anna Marie Craig scored the first goal, which kickstarted the offense for the rest of the game. Displaying solid teamwork and ball distribution, the Geeks looked anything but what their name suggests, and took a 5-0 lead into the break.

Geek coach Mark Craig said his team was a mix of first-timers and girls who had played together before.

“They really demonstrated their footskills well today,” Craig said. “We’ll need to continue to play unselfishly if we want to continue winning.”

The Lightning Strikers never gave up though, tightening their game in the second half. Striker Emmalee Squires denied a Geek shutout with a goal midway through the half making the score 7-1. Squires snuck in front of a Geek player to steal the inbounds pass from the goalkeeper and put it right back past her into the net.

In the end, the Geeks’ offensive firepower proved too much as they ran past the Strikers 9-1. Five Geeks scored goals in the game, including one forward who completed a hat trick with four goals.

Geek forward Brooke Glasnapp tries to pass the ball around a Stiker defender during the first half. THe Lightning Strikers and Geeks played their first game of the Futsal Indoor Soccer season Saturday at the East Lawrence Center.

Lightning Strikers coach Josh Ross appreciated the girls’ team play, but admitted they needed to work on keeping the ball out of the net.

“We did some good things today, but obviously the score line will suggest we need to work on our defense a bit,” Ross said.

As the Strikers work to improve on defense, the Geeks will shine their calculators, tighten their suspenders and prepare for the next game.
